Putney Choral Society is an enthusiastic and committed group,
performing much of the classic choral repertoire but with a wide
selection of contemporary and more unusual material thrown in. For example we have recently
sung Mendelsson's "Elijah" and Bach's "Christmas Oratorio" as well as
"The Golden Dawn", the first performance of a new work composed by Cyril Lloyd.
We perform two major concerts each year, in December and in May or June.
We are supported in these concerts by professional soloists and orchestra, who always do a
fantastic job and add to the pleasure of these events.
Each December we also sing Carols at various venues around London: last year, for example, we
have sung at the Piazza in Covent Garden, at Waterloo Station and at the Ritz Hotel.
We currently have approximately 80 active members but are always
looking for new singers in all parts. Choir members have a range
of music-reading ability and are not asked to take an
audition.
Our conductor is the indefatigable Stephen Rhys who provides our
musical direction and also ensures that we never lose our sense
of enjoyment.
We were exceptionally pleased that Stephen Rhys received an MBE
in the Summer 2004 Queen’s Honours list as well deserved
recognition for his considerable contribution to SW London music
making.
